Comchecker Script for Mac and Linux

I have recently updated the ComChecker script to work on the Mac and Linux platforms using the appropriate bash syntax for both platforms.

Download the script or the OS X application below.

Web View .1

I wrote a little webkit cocoa app to enable you to display a web page
in a single application window. It is not meant to be a browser
although it could function like one in a crippled way. There are no
navigational controls, etc. What got me started on this was AOL’s
release of the new AOL radio channels. The new player is supported in
webkit/Safari so it was very easy. If you use an application like
Airfoil to push audio to Airport Express units, this allows you to
separate the web radio feed from normal browser sounds.

Other options might be a persistent web IM application, web form for
logging info, etc., that you don’t want to tie to a full web browser
and other uses that might happen in it. I removed most of the menu
functions, but preferences work to change the url and window size is
remembered. The default page is my blog site, but I would recommend
checking out http://player.play.it/player/aolPlayer.html as well. If
you’ve never used Airfoil, I would recommend it too.

Conversion to FiOS TV complete

Last night I, sadly, canceled my DirecTV service in favor of the Bundle Three from Verizon. I ended up saving about $100/mo in charges. It is hard to argue with that. Of course doing that required that I re-wire my media server space to accommodate the new VZ gear. I could have used a few more zip ties though. Check out the pic after the break..

HD-PVR Drivers for Linux

Today is pretty exciting. Janne Grunau has posted his driver source for the new HD-PVR in linux. Now the question is, will I risk WAF points for testing bleeding edge? What do you think ;)

ComChecker for Linux

I am releasing ComChecker version .3c for Linux. This version is the same as what is used in the Mac component except that the variables are defined in the script instead of a separate preferences file. I have just started using this on my own server and all is well. The code is after the break and be careful of the line wrapping..

ir Blasting in Linux

I never realized how easy I had it by using the serial tuning plugin for DirecTV in SageTV. I recently switched to Verizon’s FiOS for all TV needs, their bundle pricing was too good to pass up. I also purchased a HD-PVR unit to capture HD streams. The only downside is that VZ does not allow for serial port tuning.

On a recommendation I purchased iguanaIR blaster which has suport for up to 4 devices. I set everything up trying different versions of lirc, etc., and finally settled in on the version hosted at Iguana Networks and using their prepackaged server software. With the help of the same friend, he has written a plugin for SageTV which executes a script whenever a tuning call is performed. The script is included after the break. Read more »
